HARKER SHINES, BLAND DRIVES IN WINNER AS TIGERS BEAT HOT DOGS
Freshman Garrett Harker gave up an unearned run in the 1st and then shut down Frankfort the rest of the way in first round Sectional action Wednesday night in Crawfordsville. Senior Haydn Parker drove in the tying run in 5th and fellow Senior Nick Bland came through with two outs in the sixth, knocking in Senior Kobe Burtron with what would be the winning run. If you’re good with story problems, you now know the final score was 2 to 1 in favor of the good guys.
Parker had a huge night. In addition to his RBI double, he also added a single, a sacrifice bunt, and what could have been a game saving, diving catch of Casey Henry’s sinking line drive in the 5th that he turned into an inning ending double play. Bland bounced the first pitch he saw in the 6th between the third baseman and shortstop for the game winner.
In a battle of aces, Harker took down Hot Dog starter Christian Lopez-Alanis. Harker went the distance, giving up the one unearned run on 2 hits, a pair of walks, and a hit batter. He fanned six. In six and a third, Lopez-Alanis surrendered the two earned on 7 hits and a walk. He struck out eleven Tigers.
The win moves LHS to 13 and 14 on the season. They advance to the second round of the Sectional where they will take on the host Crawfordsville, Monday afternoon at 1:30. The Tigers swept the Athenians during conference play this year and look forward to the challenge of beating a good team three times in one season.
