Tigers News · LHS Varsity Girls Soccer Tie with Covenant Christian 1-1.

The LHS girls’ soccer team hosted the Lady Warriors of Covenant Christian in their final regular season game Saturday night. This game was the Lady Tigers annual Breast Cancer Awareness match which saw the Lady Tigers sport pink jerseys and socks to commemorate all those people and families affected by cancer. The cool fall night saw the Lady Tigers battle a Lady Warriors team that has historically played the Lady Tigers well and this night was no exception. The game would finish 1-1 with neither team in the first half created many opportunities with the Lady Tigers nearly getting the go-ahead goal compliments of senior captain Kirstin Byrd only to be denied by the Lady Warriors GK.   It was the Lady Tigers that struck first after a corner kick was delivered dangerously into the box by Senior Laura Lemen that the Lady Warriors were unable to clear. Junior captain Madison Maher was able to latch onto the ball with a clean strike that broke the deadlock and saw the Lady Tigers carry a 1-0 lead into halftime. As the game continued to not offer many clear cut chances for either side, the Lady Warriors responded by scoring from their own corner kick in the second half as the Lady Tigers were unable to clear the ball far enough out of the box before being punished with shot that snuck through the near post. The Lady Tigers sought to not allow any more opportunities as the game wound down in the late stages and did not press as high as they had earlier in the match.  Coach Hyatt thought it was a competitive match that saw both teams perform better in a half with the first half belonging to the Lady Tigers and the second belonging to the Lady Warriors.   Coach Hyatt was quite impressed with the efforts of Junior Captain Madison Maher scoring her fifth goal of the season and covering lots of ground in both the attack and defense. Senior MF Sam Malagon was very effective the entire match positioning herself well the entire night to break up the Lady Warriors attack and offering support to her backline.  The Lady Tigers finished 9-3-3 in the regular season and 6-1 (2nd place) in conference.  The Lady Tigers will be back in action on Thursday night at Danville in Sectional play at 7:00 pm against the Lady Frankfort Hotdogs.
